The nostalgia brought on by vintage and classic Ferguson and Massey Ferguson tractors is all well and good, particularly for those who remember the days when they were new, but there's something about the throaty roar of a modern six - cylinder MF that sets pulses racing. If your thinking runs along similar lines, then read on – as this is the DVD for you.
Coleraine – based Linton Film Productions has added yet another farming DVD to its extensive library and Massey on the Farm comes under the spotlight in this issue of CM&Fe. Following the farming year year of Sandy Greer, the well-known farmer and contractor from County Antrim, Massey on the Farm shows all the jobs undertaken by Sandy, his employees and a well-loved fleet of Massey Ferguson tractors across the picturesque Northern Ireland countryside.
The film begins with a look at the contract hedge cutting carried out by the team and the machinery used for the task. For those of you interested in specifications, George Dallas explains the details of each machine as he narrates. The background and purpose relating to the jobs is also described.
Before ploughing, land preparation and drilling is portrayed in detail. The less glamorous jobs – such as slurry and manure spreading – are also shown, with one of Sandy's loader tractors, an MF 6455, getting in on the action.
Call us old romantics, but in the CM&Fe office we got very excited about the farm's 1972 MF 135 working alongside the more modern tackle – like a classic MF 3070 and an MF 6465. After all, there are some jobs that are more suited to a small machine - like ridging potato beds and sowing grass seed.
Other jobs undertaken by Sandy and his team include planting and harvesting potatoes, silage making and sowing and harvesting barley. With such a lot of action crammed onto one disc, it's hard to single out a favourite machine or job, but we think you'll agree that the sound of Sandy's big Massey Ferguson 6497, at work hauling slurry to the fields, is hard to beat!
The DVD is priced at £15, plus postage and packing, and is available from the website: http://www.lintonfilmproductions.com
